Monkeypox/MPX
 
On Aug. 4, 2022, the federal government declared a public health emergency in response to the monkeypox, also known as MPX, outbreak. We are monitoring the MPX outbreak closely and are following CDC and local public health guidelines. We are not aware of any cases among our own membership or employee base.
 
The key to containing the outbreak is to limit the spread – if you think you have symptoms of MPX, please contact your health care provider for advice, testing, and medical care. Until you receive your test result, wash your hands often, isolate yourself from others as much as possible and, if you must be around others, wear a mask.
 
The viral strain responsible for the current outbreak causes mild symptoms (fever followed by a rash), with few hospitalizations and up until recently no deaths.
 
We believe the virus is predominantly spread by close contact with skin lesions or contaminated linens but can also spread through droplets when someone infected sneezes or coughs.

Testing for COVID-19
 
You should get tested for COVID-19 if you have COVID-19 symptoms, have been exposed to someone that is confirmed or suspected to have COVID-19, or if you are asked to do so by a health care professional or public health official.
 
What COVID-19 tests are available to you
 
There are three categories of COVID-19 tests:

• Antibody or Serology Tests: This is a blood test that can tell if a person has had COVID-19 in the past

• NAAT or PCR Tests: Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs), which include polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, collect fluids from the respiratory tract and are considered the best test to diagnose COVID-19, but results can take more than 24 hours

• Antigen or Rapid Tests: This diagnostic test uses a swab to collect fluids from the nose or back of the throat and results are available quickly, but it is less sensitive than NAAT

 
Where you can get tested for COVID-19
 
COVID-19 testing is available at:

Free at-home COVID-19 tests
 
As of April 4, 2022, Medicare beneficiaries can get up to eight free COVID-19 over-the-counter antigen tests each month from pharmacies at more than a dozen national and regional chain retailers. A partial list of participating pharmacies can be found at https://www.medicare.gov/medicare-coronavirus. These tests are paid for by Medicare so make sure you bring your red, white, and blue Medicare card to get your free tests at a pharmacy.
 
What we know about the COVID-19 vaccine
 
Tested, safe and effective vaccines are one of the most important tools we have to end the COVID-19 pandemic. Since Dec. 2020, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the use of three COVID-19 vaccines, manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, and Moderna.*
 
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine requires one shot and is limited to only certain individuals. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require two shots to get the most protection:
 

• Pfizer-BioNTech doses should be given 3 weeks (21 days) apart

• Moderna doses should be given 4 weeks (28 days) apart

 
New data shows that vaccine protection wanes over time and a COVID-19 booster shot is strongly recommended when eligible. Currently, all U.S. individuals age 5 and up are eligible to receive a COVID-19 booster shot.

How to protect yourself and others
 
The best way to protect yourself and others during this outbreak is to slow the spread of the virus by getting vaccinated and when eligible, boosted.

Although many states have eased COVID-19 restrictions, the CDC is strongly recommending that all individuals stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccination, including all primary series doses and boosters for their age group.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this year’s flu season is expected to be more severe than last year’s. This is in part because of lower immunity among the general population as many experienced shutdowns during most of 2020. Now, health experts are urging the public to get their COVID-19 and annual flu vaccinations at the same time to better protect themselves against a possible twindemic – in which both the flu and COVID-19 viruses simultaneously spreads and causes infections.
 
Both the flu and COVID-19 are contagious respiratory illnesses caused by different viruses, and it is possible to have the flu and COVID-19 at the same time. Older adults, especially people with underlying medical conditions are at higher risk, which is why these individuals need to take extra precaution such as vaccinations and other measure to help prevent getting ill. Here are six tips from John Kim, MD, chief medical officer for Alignment Health Plan, for staying healthy during the fall and winter months:
 

• Speak with your doctor about which flu vaccine is right for you and your family. For the 2021-22 flu season, there are two types of injectable vaccines and one that is given by nasal spray. According to the CDC, different flu vaccines are approved for people of different ages and health statuses. For example, people with some chronic health conditions should not get some types of influenza vaccines while others should not receive flu vaccines at all (though uncommon).

• Schedule your flu shot. If possible, schedule it at the same time as your COVID-19 booster shot for dual protection.

  • While both vaccines can be given at the same visit, seniors should follow the recommended schedule for either vaccine. 

  • If you haven’t gotten your currently recommended doses of COVID-19 vaccine, get a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as you can.

• Schedule your COVID-19 booster vaccination. If you have received the COVID-19 vaccine and it’s been six months since your last dose, getting a booster shot will help bolster your immunity and keep you protected for the months ahead. To learn whether you’re eligible for a COVID-19 booster shot, visit the CDC’s booster shots webpage.

• Consider curbside or drive-through vaccination sites. If you live in an area that has community transmission, schedule appointments at locations with limited in-person interactions and that allow you to stay in your car for your safety as well as for the safety of staff and other patients.

• Practice health and safety measures. Continue to follow the recommended health and safety measures, including wearing a mask, washing your hands, maintaining physical distances, and limiting the size of group gatherings, especially those indoors. In addition, make sure you have fever-reducing medication at home, and drink plenty of water if you get sick.

Maximize benefits offered by your health plans. A lot of health plans such as Alignment Health Plan offer free transportation to vaccination clinics, free fitness classes to stay healthy as well as over-the-counter allowances that could be used toward supplies such as Vitamin C and Zinc supplements that help boost immunity.

The latest on COVID-19
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Delta variant is more contagious and spreads rapidly in crowded public spaces, even among vaccinated individuals. However, COVID-19 vaccines can still help protect against, or at least minimize the severity of illnesses and reduce the risk of hospitalization from, the Delta variant.

Since December 2020, three vaccines were authorized for emergency use in the United States to prevent COVID-19 – Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Moderna. In addition, on Aug. 23, 2021, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) granted full approval of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for people age 16 and older.

With the variant, everyone is at risk of contracting the virus, and those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure, or illnesses that cause immunodeficiencies like HIV and cancer are at the highest risk.

Staying Safe During the Surge
We recommend that seniors continue to follow important CDC guidelines such as:

• Wearing a mask in public indoor places to reduce viral transmission;

• Physical distancing;

• Avoiding large, public gatherings or busy crowded areas such as restaurants, bars, fitness centers, vacation spots, or indoor spaces with limited ventilation;

• And washing hands often. (After washing hands) - If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands

• If visiting friends or loved ones in a nursing or assisted living facility, make sure to wear a mask and wash hands before and after your visit to protect yourself and the residents of the facility 

Additional vaccinations
The CDC recently endorsed the use of an additional dose of COVID-19 vaccine – a booster shot – for people with moderately to severely compromised immune systems at least 4 weeks after the initial two-dose series. The latest CDC plan is to offer booster shots for all Americans beginning the week of September 20 and starting eight months after an individual’s second dose. Alignment has already identified members who are immunocompromised by CDC definitions to begin outreach and aid in booster appointments.
 
As we head into flu season, Alignment also recommends that seniors get both the COVID-19 vaccine and the flu vaccine. While the CDC has OK’d receiving both vaccines on the same day, general consensus advises that the COVID-19 vaccine should be taken first, with the flu shot taken 2-3 weeks before or after the second COVID-19 vaccine dose. Check with your primary care provider to determine the best schedule for you.
 
Preventive medication
While there is no proven medication or supplements that prevent the spread or contraction of COVID-19, general multivitamins that contain Zinc and Vitamin C are helpful in boosting the immune system.

Medications, such as Ivermectin, are also not proven and the potential side effects and long-term effects of taking such drugs may be harmful to a person’s health.

ORANGE, Calif. (June 30, 2021) – The Summer Solstice has officially ushered in the start of summer, and Alignment Healthcare (NASDAQ: ALHC) wants seniors to stay safe and healthy this season. People ages 65 or older are more prone to heat-related health illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion, especially in the dog days of summer. Whether it’s staying closer to home on a staycation or enjoying outdoor activities, Alignment has some tips to help seniors make the most of their summer to beat the heat, stay fit and travel safely.
 
Beat the Heat

• Stay hydrated! Start your day drinking 8 ounces of water every three hours. You know you're hydrated when your urine is nearly clear and has just a slight tinge of yellow. If it’s dark yellow, it could mean you are dehydrated, so keep those kidneys happy and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

• Use a fan to stay cool if you don't have air-conditioning. If you must go outside, plan your errands for the early morning and late afternoon to avoid overheating during the hottest periods of the day.

• Wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your eyes and face from the sun's harmful UV rays, and wear sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher on your face and exposed arms/legs before going outside to prevent sunburn. Remember that you can still get a mean sunburn on a cloudy day.

Stay Fit

• Exercise indoors where possible. A brisk early-morning walk at the local mall surrounded by air conditioning could be a great alternative.

• Keep your cell phone fully charged with an extra battery pack on hand when hiking, camping or enjoying time in the great outdoors in the event there is a heat-related emergency. Informing a trusted neighbor, friend or family member of your outdoor routines can be an important safety measure in the summer. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water.

• Many Medicare Advantage plans like those offered by Alignment Healthcare provide members with fitness and wellness benefits to help seniors lead happier, healthier lives. Whether it’s exercising at the gym or online through at-home-workouts, members can find more information by contacting their health plan provider.

Travel Safely

• If you’re traveling abroad, always research health safety risks at your destination. Some destinations require vaccinations that are needed at least 4-6 weeks out, and don’t forget your COVID-19 vaccination card if you’re visiting a country that requires you to show proof for entry. Check out the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vaccine Information Statements (VIS) to get the latest information.

• Bring an ample supply of medication and avoid placing them in your suitcase in the event your luggage is lost. Always pack your medications in your carry-on bag so you’ll have them with you when you need them.

• If you’re planning a cross-country trip in an RV or car, schedule an inspection by a qualified technician and keep an emergency kit in your car. Road trips could be a good strategy for seniors who prefer to be outdoors but aren’t yet comfortable with large crowds. When making stops at rest stops, gas stations and local dining establishments, be sure to wear a mask and use hand sanitizer for your protection, especially when indoors.

Medicare Advantage company expands executive team as it advances position as an industry leader

ORANGE, Calif. (February 24, 2021) – Alignment Healthcare, a mission-based, tech-enabled Medicare Advantage insurance company, today announced the expansion of its executive team with the appointment of health care veteran Rajesh Shrestha as president, new markets and chief business officer. 24 Medicare Advantage plans honored nationwide for cost-sharing effectiveness in design of medical and prescription drug benefits for Medicare beneficiaries in 2021

(Nov. 5, 2020) – Alignment Healthcare, a California-based Medicare Advantage company that recently announced expansion into Nevada and North Carolina, has been recognized for “Excellence in 2021 Medicare Advantage Benefits Value” by independent managed care research firm HealthMetrix Research Inc. Nationally ranked nonprofit health system and Medicare Advantage insurance provider sign agreement to expand access to care for Medicare-eligible beneficiaries in Southern California

ORANGE, Calif. (Oct. 12, 2020) – MemorialCare, a leading nonprofit health system in Southern California with hundreds of primary care and specialty providers, four top hospitals and 200 locations, is joining Alignment Healthcare’s Medicare Advantage provider network starting Jan. 1, 2021, expanding its scope of coverage to 2 million Medicare-eligible residents in Los Angeles and Orange counties.[1]

(Oct. 1, 2020) – Today, nearly 5.3 million seniors in California can begin shopping for new health care coverage from Alignment Health Plan, one of U.S. News & World Report’s 2020 “Best” insurance companies for Medicare Advantage.[1] The award-winning plan from Orange-based Alignment Healthcare is offering 30 Medicare Advantage plans across the state in 2021, including eight new plan choices, while expanding its coverage into two new counties – Ventura and San Luis Obispo.

(Oct. 1, 2020) – Alignment Health Plan, an award-winning Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan from Alignment Healthcare, will offer several new plan options, 24/7 concierge services and a benefits “black card” to more than 400,000 Medicare-eligible seniors in Clark County, Nevada, during Medicare’s annual enrollment period, which kicks off Oct. 15 for coverage starting Jan. 1, 2021.[1]

Clark County Medicare beneficiaries have three Alignment plan options to choose from, including AVA™ HMO, a virtual-first health plan that includes a dedicated virtual primary care physician and virtual specialists – accessible by phone or video on Alignment’s proprietary AVA™ data and technology platform – $50 monthly Part B premium rebate and $100 per month over-the-counter (OTC) credit, redeemable at Walmart, Walgreens, CVS and other retailers across the country.

Nevada is one of the fastest growing states in the United States, especially for seniors. According to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of retirement-age residents is increasing, with nearly 1 in 6 residents now age 65 or older.[2]

Alignment is also introducing new benefits such as pest control, pet care, and air purifier services for eligible members in select plans to address the critical challenges seniors are facing known as “social determinants of health” – social factors that directly impact clinical outcomes. In Nevada, food insecurity has increased 32% in the past three years among adults ages 60 and older, while poverty has increased 21% since 2013 among adults ages 65 and older.[3] To assist seniors who may be facing these everyday social challenges, Alignment’s new 2021 social benefits will be available alongside existing benefits such as grocery allowance and non-emergency clinical transportation offered through the company’s ACCESS On-Demand Concierge program.

Medicare Advantage company brings Alignment Health Plan to North Carolina in 2021, expanding services to Chatham, Johnston counties

RALEIGH, N.C., & ORANGE, Calif. (Oct. 1, 2020) – Alignment Healthcare, an award-winning Medicare Advantage company that has served the greater Raleigh area since 2014, is offering Alignment Health Plan options with socially conscious benefits for the first time to seniors in North Carolina this Medicare open enrollment period starting Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. The company, which now provides medical and managed care services to patients at Alignment Healthcare Centers in Wake County, will offer three Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans – all of which include Alignment’s ACCESS On-Demand Concierge program and black benefits card – with coverage starting Jan. 1, 2021.

North Carolina has become a popular retirement destination for seniors. By 2025, one in five residents in North Carolina will be 65 or older, and in the next two decades, seniors aged 75-84 will be the fastest-growing segment in the state.[1]

Among the three HMO options from Alignment Health Plan – all of which offer $0 telehealth visits – is the Platinum plan, a $0 premium HMO point of service plan that offers more flexibility and affordability for seniors. Platinum plan benefits include:

• $0 copay for covered generic prescription drugs

• $0 copay for transportation to doctor appointments within 30 miles

• A $40 monthly allowance for eligible over-the-counter (OTC) items such as diabetes care accessories and cold and allergy medicine

Other plan options include NC Premier, a $0 premium HMO, and NCPlus, an HMO designed for those enrolled in both Medicaid and Medicare, which includes enhanced dental benefits and $100 monthly OTC allowance. Depending on the plan selected, Alignment Health Plan North Carolina members will have access to benefits that directly assist them with social challenges that many seniors face – challenges such as food insecurity, loneliness and lack of transportation that may affect health outcomes:

• Pet care and boarding for eligible members who are hospitalized or experience an emergency and need pet care while they are away

• Personal emergency response systems (PERS) that provide eligible members who live alone or at risk of a fall access to emergency assistance with the push of a button

• Fitness memberships with local gyms and fitness classes – or access online at-home workouts – all at no extra cost

Award-winning health care system and Medicare Advantage insurance provider to expand care coverage to more than 580k San Diegans eligible for Medicare [1]

ORANGE, Calif. (Sept. 2, 2020) – Today, Alignment Healthcare, a Medicare Advantage insurance provider, and Scripps Health, a nonprofit health care system based in San Diego, announced the signing of an agreement to offer a new plan option in San Diego County.
 
Starting in 2021, Alignment will add more than 950 primary care and specialist physicians from Scripps Clinic and Scripps Coastal Medical Center to its San Diego network. Medicare beneficiaries who enroll in the new Alignment Health Plan option can seek “in-network” care with those Scripps physicians beginning Jan. 1, 2021. Members of other San Diego Alignment Health Plan products will continue to have access to Scripps hospitals. Medicare’s annual enrollment period for the 2021 plan year begins Oct. 15.
 
“By teaming with Alignment Healthcare, San Diego residents will have another health plan option to access high quality Scripps providers, which is especially important in the midst of such challenging conditions during the coronavirus pandemic,” said Shawn Forrester, Scripps Health corporate vice president, payer relations.
